English Foundations Course Description

English Foundations Course Info

This course aims to familiarize students with the various styles of writing expected of them throughout high school through reading and analyzing selected works and developing their own writing skills. Students will learn about each form in the first half of each module through and then apply what they learned in the latter half as they engage in the writing process and produce their own writing products. Selected pieces of fiction and non-fiction will be used throughout the course to develop students analysis and critical reading skills and to serve as models for the writing assignments. By the end of the course, students will have engaged with poetry, the narrative, and the four forms of informational/nonfiction reading and writing (literary nonfiction, expository, argument, and procedural). Students will continue to engage with their own work and review and edit it throughout the course resulting in a portfolio of their best work.

This course includes a broad series of lessons and activities that offer a variety of modalities for ultimate student engagement and content retention. Each unit contains a series of lessons that include an introduction of content, virtual demonstration of that content, and repeated opportunity to practice that content, along with a quiz per lesson, exam per unit, and final exam at the end of the course.
